A
concert in tribute to
senior tabla player Ustad Aslam Khan took place at
the Anwaar Club Auditorium in Sialkot on 23rd December 2005.
Organised by the Najafi Sangeet Academy, the purpose of the evening was
to pay homage to the late musician who passed away in Sialkot on 18th
September 2005, aged 70.
Ustad
Aslam Khan, popularly known as “Accha Pehalwan” was a disciple of
the legendary tabla maestro Ustad Allahditta Khan and revered as an
authority over his extensive knowledge over the tabla solo repertoire of
the Punjab gharana. Blessed with a warm personality and gentle nature,
Aslam Khan dedicated his life towards the propagation of tabla playing
in Pakistan. Apart from his love for music, the maestro had a passion
for wrestling and poetry, writing under the pseudonym
of “Najafi”. He leaves behind a healthy line of disciples including
Kaleem Raza, Gulfam Raza, Erum Butt, Naveed, Sohail Bhatti and son Abid
Ali Khan. His nephew, the late Khalifa Akhtar Hussain Khan had also been
partly trained by him.
Kaleem
Raza, a senior disciple of the late maestro and head of the Najafi
Sangeet Academy had the duty of hosting the evening’s proceedings,
which comprised musicians from both Lahore and Sialkot. Tabla was the
main focus and included solo performances from Imran Gill, Abid Ali
Khan, Saqib Razaq and Haroon Samuel. The highlight of the evening
was the performance by ghazal maestro Aqeel Manzoor who entertained the
audience with some memorable compositions.
