Sponsor List

A new initiative is being launched by Sadarang Archives aimed at safeguarding musical traditions in danger of falling into oblivion. The basis of the scheme involves sponsoring a number of classical musicians over a period of twelve months

The primary reason for starting the scheme is to ensure that an essential part of our cultural heritage does not fall victim to historical neglect. Classical music has been on the demise in Pakistan for over fifty years and urgent steps are require to halt the stagnation.  It is hoped that this initiative will highlight the importance of our musical heritage and form an important step in the propagation of classical music. ............... ::More::

Plan of the initiative

The basis of the scheme is to provide financial assistance to at least two or three musicians comprising both senior and young practitioners over a period of twelve months. Senior musicians will be supported only on the condition they teach their art to a talented youngster. Each student will receive a monthly stipend in order to provide assistance to his family. Sponsorship will also extend to talented musicians of the younger generation as a means of encouragement to pursue their careers as classical musicians.

The sponsorship programme will initially be limited to six months by which time the overall progress of each student and young musician will be assessed by our selected board members. Donors will be able to view the progress of each musician by visiting www.sadarang.com Video and audio files of all the featured musicians will be posted on a quarterly basis for individuals to monitor development and progress. If sufficient progress is made over the six-month period, then sponsorship will continue to the period of twelve months. Following the end of the allotted period, the board will analyse the overall progress of the project and decide on its continuation.

Success Story -Young Qamar Abbas  Pakhawaj

The main inspiration for the project comes from a similar initiative undertaken by Sadarang Archives with pakhawaj maestro, Ustad Allah Lok since January 2004, as a means of encouraging him to teach his nephew. Aged only 15, Qamar Abbas has shown tremendous progress on the pakhawaj over the past year and is one of the selected students lined up for sponsorship.

The Selected Musicians

The teaching-learning process will follow on the basis of the age-old methods of the Ustad- Shagird silsila (the Guru-Shishya parampara) or the Teacher- Student tradition which is a feature of learning traditional arts in the Indian sub-continent. The tradition assures continuity of knowledge and is based on the student spending a lengthy period of      apprenticeship under a skilled teacher......::More::
